One former Liverpool player has landed himself a first-team job with Serie B side US Catanzaro.
As is often the case in football, the summer break has seen manage changes across clubs in Europe.
After months of football culminating either success or failure, football clubs use this season to evaluate their season.
These evaluations often lead to managers being replaced and new players brought in.
Several former Liverpool players have found themselves taking up first team and backroom staff roles this summer.
Xabi Alonso’s move to Real Madrid is the most high-profile move by a former Liverpool player this summer.
The Spanish tactician left his post at Bayer Leverkusen after two and half successful seasons to become Trent Alexander-Arnold’s coach.
He will be hoping to repeat the success he enjoyed at Bay Arena in Madrid, who will be competing for the title with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
Meanwhile, while Alonso is working as first-team coach in Spain, his former Liverpool teammates Alvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres have landed coaching jobs with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid B teams respectively.
Elsewhere, former Reds winger Stewart Downing has rejoined Liverpool as a backroom staff member, while Kolo Toure, a former defender at the club recently joined Manchester City’s coaching set up.
Another former Anfield midfielder has now been announced as US Catanzaro coach?
The ex-Red in question is Alberto Aquilani.
The former Italy midfielder joined Liverpool in August 2009 following the departure of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.
He was expected to be a hit at the club and made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in the League Cup fourth-round clash at Arsenal on October 28, 2009.
However, his his Anfield career never really took off and he scored just two goals in his debut season.
Aquilani then spent the seasons that followed on loan at Juventus and AC Milan before completing a permanent move to Fiorentina.
After retiring in 2019, the 40-year-old was announced as the head coach of Fiorentina’s under-18 team, remaining in that position until December, when he joined the first team staff as an assistant to Giuseppe Iachin.
After that spell with the youth team, Aquilani got his first first-team coaching job with Serie B club SC Pisa.
He left the role in June last year, and a year later has now returned to management with another Serie B side Catanzaro.
“US Catanzaro 1929 announces that it has reached an agreement with Alberto Aquilani, who will be entrusted with the technical guidance of the first team for the next two seasons,” a club statement read.
